smithtek is a beginner's resource center for self-hosting Internet domains using Linux. Rather than writing yet another book on the subject it was decided to teach by example, instead. We hope you'll find this approach more useful and that we can also help you avoid much of the frustration we encountered while migrating to Linux about eight months ago. Our goal will be to make it easy enough that almost no one would be intimidated by the inherent complexity.
smithtek comprises a multi-domain UNIX-class network with the goal of helping others self-host Internet domains utilizing a LAMP-based system (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) which is at the heart of nearly all Internet domains. As your domain(s) will use open-source software exclusively, it will cost absolutely nothing except for the hardware - a modest i686+ computer with an inexpensive router - and the usual $10 registration fee per domain, per year.
If your needs don't require enterprise-grade hosting then self-hosting is an excellent, viable alternative for your small-to-medium and home-based business/organization, using your existing broadband connection. In addition, you'll gain complete control and freedom over your system... unlike you would if using a third-party hosting service which could become quite expensive.
After a price is determined, smithtek will accept orders for custom-built domain servers. Reservations will be required two months in advance and include the cost of hardware. Only two systems per month will be built, for a total of 24 systems per year, so there will not be very many slots available. For more details on custom-built domain servers, please go here.
This domain, and all our others, are currently in their initial development cycles. At this point, no email servers are in a usable state... their configurations will take the most effort. Postfix is the email server that will be used.
